Chapter 3

The Yoke of Memories and Mnemosynes

1

“Chief Totoki, do you think Salk…I mean, Uritsky is the culprit behind the sensory crime?”

“I wouldn’t have flown in from Lyon if he wasn’t.”

A silent sense of tension hung over the Saint Petersburg branch office’s meeting room. Chief Totoki stood in front of a flexible screen set on the wall, and seated before her were the branch head, members of the intelligence department, and investigators from the electronic-drug criminal investigation department. No one made an attempt to hide the grave expressions on their faces.

“We’ve discovered Uritsky’s whereabouts,” Chief Totoki announced, placing a marker on the city map displayed on the screen. “Slavy Avenue 45, apartment 32. According to the intelligence department’s report, he moved into this apartment under his alias last month after resigning from Rig City. He’d been using this apartment as his base of operations to sell electronic drugs—”

Uritsky’s true identity turned out to be an electronic-drug manufacturer with deep connections to the Russian mafia. For the last six months up until the month prior, he’d posed as Cliff Salk, a Russian-American, to infiltrate Rig City. His motives weren’t clear yet, but there was no doubt it was somehow related to electronic narcotics.

And luckily, or perhaps unluckily for him, Uritsky was currently in Saint Petersburg.

“We at the Interpol Intelligence Department have assigned a civilian cooperator to stay in contact with Uritsky already,” one of the intelligence personnel said. “We’ve let him go free for now, since we were hoping to expose what route he uses to sell his drugs to the mafia, but…”

“Since the virus infections have been spreading worldwide, resolving the sensory crime takes precedence,” Totoki said. “We have a warrant for Uritsky’s arrest, so our top priority is taking custody of him.”

“Where is he right now?”

“He’s returned to his apartment this morning and hasn’t left since.”

“Then make preparations to bust in.”

“Keep the surrounding area under police supervision.”

The people involved hurriedly left the meeting room. It seemed the talks were over, and as an electronic investigator, Echika had nothing more to do until they brought him into custody. And so she got to her feet, but…

“Investigator Hieda.” Harold looked up at her, still seated in his chair. “Shouldn’t we check Uritsky’s room before the police comb it for evidence?”

His suggestion was reasonable. No matter how convenient Brain Diving was, they couldn’t do much if the culprit willingly wiped their own Mnemosynes. That meant examining the scene and getting a grasp of his personality was quite important.

“Understood. You should go get permission from Chief Totoki, just in case,” Echika said while reaching for her coat, which sat draped on the back of her chair. “I’ll wait for you at the entrance hall.”

She parted ways with him and left the meeting room. As soon as she stepped into the corridor, she felt her shoulders sag powerlessly. Thank goodness. She could still converse with him normally.

Neither of them had touched on their argument from the night prior since the meeting that morning. Echika had
